Reviews: Meditations (6)
“Essential reading”
(Paperback)
by John Oakley
This quickly became one of my top 3 book recommendations. For me it legitimised and affirmed my way of thinking, it was also a strange yet comforting feeling relating to someone that lived so many years ago, almost like a kinship. I would say this is a must have for anyone seeking to expand or change their way of thinking
“Meditations”
(Paperback)
by WillPope
This book will soon become an essential item to carry around with you for a quick glance now and again - solace and wisdom can seldom be found so readily in such brief writings. It will teach you how to think, act and live. It will teach you not to fear death, as not to fear nature. Aurelius was a man of honed reason and wisdom, and imparts this with humility through the pages of this unforgettable text.
“Relevant today”
(Paperback)
by Dawn Lewis
I've been curious about this book for a long time but kept putting it off, thinking it would be too dense and too hard to read. Wrong! I'm left with a vision of a modern-day man, writing thoughts on Post-It notes and sticking them all over his desk. A lot of what Marcus Aurelius had to say (to himself) is relevant today - which also surprised me. I was disappointed that there wasn't more of his writing. Most of the book is taken up by the introduction (useful - I wouldn't recommend skipping this part) and the notes at the end. I feel like there should be more, but who knows what has been lost? My thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for a free copy to review. This review is entirely my own, unbiased, opinion.
“More than an Emperor”
(Hardback)
by Jack Stylianou
His words are stuck with me every day, and it made me a person to implement good values into my life. Life changing.
“As relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. This versions annotations add excellent additional colour.”
(Hardback)
by Tony Grout
It is a gift to read the inner dialog of an emperor of Rome and to see that he shares the same challenges as we all do today. Even with all of his relative wealth, and the trappings of an emperor. Reading him remind himself of better ways to think about the challenges he faces and the people who he may find difficult and how to do that is inspiring. There is much to take from this book. A book, for reading a little each day or in times of needing wisdom and exploring our own thoughts about how we internalise the lessons Marcus was teaching himself. This is my second copy, I also own another translation. I enjoy both and read them together, the different translations allow additional meaning to come through. This versions annotations are very helpful. I would have given the book five stars if it had better formatting, it feels cramped. I understand spacing the entries would have added more pages but I would have preferred more thinner pages. Thank you Robin Waterfield.
