This book is fantastic. It’s the story of Jake Marley (yes, really), a retired police detective who had a terrible childhood, with an abusive father and a mother who went missing. Jake finds meaning in books and reading, which leads him to a better life than might have been imagined for him. After retiring young he’s off on a trip across Europe, where, through a twist of fate, he ends up in a little town on the border of Germany and Austria, taking part in a walking holiday. When one of the group dies, Marley is drawn into some investigation work. All is not as it seems, and things take a bit of a turn, making the group members potential suspects in a potential crime. Marley works alongside the local police officer, in an unofficial capacity, to help solve a mystery. This book is much more than a mystery though. Marley’s own story is interwoven with the current events. It’s a story of love and loss and is very moving. Marley’s journey is both physical and spiritual, allowing him to grieve and move on from some terrible events at home. There are many ghosts to be laid to rest. Jake Marley is a great character. Astute, funny, in a deadpan way, and very kind, he’s a man I really warmed to. I’d be very happy to see him enjoy further travels. I loved the other characters too, especially the hotel workers and the Austrian detective Werner, There is great warmth in JP’s writing and I’d highly recommend this book. Special shout out for the wonderful cover, which stylishly blends Austria into Wiltshire. Beautiful to look at, beautiful to read.
