Reviews: March Violets (2)
“An Excellent Piece of Writing”
(Paperback)
by John Sullivan
This is the first book I have read by Philip Kerr. A good starting point as this was the first book he wrote in his 'Berlin Noir' trilogy. This is wonderful writing. Extremely readable and featuring the debut of the private eye, Bernhard Gunther, surely one of thriller literature’s iconic characters. The plot builds layer upon layer effortlessly and the setting of Germany in 1936, as the Nazis built relentlessly towards the start of the Second World War, provides a rich backdrop for this thriller. Very highly recommended. I look forward to reading more from this excellent author about this maverick character.
“Classic private eye novel ”

My first Bernie Gunther novel, and I loved the irreverence and the balance of light and dark. Phil Kerr has a wonderful way with words, his description of youth smoking has stuck in my mind as it amused me greatly. Am looking forward to reading more.
