Reviews: Make Life Happier (15)
“Practical, evidence-based wisdom for a happier life”
(Paperback)
This is a warm, accessible and genuinely useful book that brings the science of wellbeing to life in a way that feels both realistic and uplifting. Rather than offering abstract ideas, it focuses on small, practical, evidence-based actions that anyone can take to improve their own happiness and contribute positively to others.
What stands out is the balance between evidence and humanity. The insights are clearly rooted in research, but the tone is never heavy or academic. Instead, it feels encouraging and grounded, with a strong emphasis on connection, kindness and the idea that our actions really do matter.
The author’s perspective is especially compelling given his 15 years leading Action for Happiness as CEO, where he has helped grow a global movement reaching millions of people with practical, evidence-based approaches to wellbeing. That real-world experience comes through clearly in the book’s grounded, practical tone.
I particularly appreciated how the book links personal wellbeing with wider social impact. It makes a compelling case that improving our own happiness is not a selfish act, but something that can ripple out to strengthen relationships and communities.
A calm, hopeful and practical read. Highly recommended for anyone looking to make meaningful, lasting changes that genuinely add up to a happier life.
“Make Life Happier is an inspirational read”
(Paperback)
I have worked as a mental health occupational therapist for over 40 years and I would 100% recommend this book. The brief summary questions/reflections after each chapter is extremely useful. The book is a well researched easy and enjoyable, satisfying read. It acknowledges the complexity of human life with all its ups and downs.
I have recommended it to my colleagues, clients and local library.
I have also passed on words of wisdom and action idea snippets ideas from Make Life Happier to the client group I work with and they found it to be very motivational and positive.
“A book for everyone”
(Paperback)
I first came across Mark and his organisation many years ago with the Action for Happiness calendars when every day was a struggle, commuting and working. The premise was simple – one small action a day, which you chose whether you wanted to do or not, with each month having a theme. I came to look forward to my daily notifications on my phone.
So, imagine my delight when I found out that this book had been written. It has so many useful thoughts, perspectives and feelings, underlined by modern research and also ancient wisdom – it even has a decent reference section so I can read further if I want.
But the thing I love most about this book is that it is about sparking ideas about how to be happier – not the happiest possible.
I love the honesty and authenticity that shines through. I like that Mark shares his personal struggles. For instance, trying the wild swimming and not feeling euphoric. He makes you feel that everything is going to be okay, and who doesn’t want that in this day and age?
It is very readable, and I would suggest sharing this with your children as well as your parents.
“A truly Transforming book”
