Reviews: Lightfall: The Dark Times (5)
“Another gorgeous instalment!”
(Paperback)
As if things didn't get dark enough in book two! This continues the series wonderfully - things are still as gorgeous and fun as ever, while we get a look into a bold new future. I can't wait to see where things go in book 4, it'll be a day one pickup for me!
“Beautiful!”
(Paperback)
Third book in this series did not disappoint! The illustrations are GORGEOUS and honestly seem to be getting even better with each comic (if that's even possible!). Bea and Gad are so lovable and the actual adventure they go on is very fun to read about. I would recommend this series to anyone looking for a cozy read that enjoys Hilda, Adventure Time and Ghibli!
“A beautifully illustrated epic adventure!”
(Paperback)
If you are only just becoming aware of this series, like I was, then stop everything and buy the first two volumes immediately. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
Lightfall is a stunning graphic novel series for anyone 9+ to fall in love with. Transcendent artwork and exciting story telling that reads like an epic fantasy folktale. I was transported to the world of Irpa and completely swept up in the magic and history of it all. Tim Probert is masterful with his artwork, it almost doesn’t even need words. The pictures he creates reminds me of Aaron Becker in their ability to evoke emotion, a sense of time, and ultimately sweep the reader away.
It almost seems unfair that he is equally as talented a writer. Volume 3 sees our unlikely heroes struggling with themes of displacement, self-doubt, depression, and courage. Probert cuts right to the heart of these themes, with perfect touches of vulnerability and more than a little humour (I, as an adult, absolutely giggled aloud), to create compelling characters any one could relate to. The raw adventure of the story is biblical in scope opening with Cad and Bea leading the survivors of the Battle of Rinn on an exodus to safety and ending with the discovery of Irpa’s own creation story.
The art work, the adventure, the humour, the heart, everything about this is a 5 star read from me and I’ll be happily suggesting it to every parent, kid, or teen with even the remotest interest in graphic novels.
“Beautiful adventure series”
(Paperback)
I was kindly sent a review copy and I can happily say this is just as beautiful and engaging as the first two! I particularly loved the traveling city and library illustrations - truly incredible artwork. I love how Bea and Wally help each other through everything and I can't wait to see where this story goes next, it's fast becoming my favourite graphic novel series!
“A visually stunning novel”
(Paperback)
Lightfall: The Dark Times is the third book in the Lightfall series by Tim Probert, a children’s fantasy graphic novel.
This instalment continues directly on from the previous books, so I would definitely recommend reading the series in order to fully appreciate the story and character development.
The book is beautifully illustrated, with artwork that really brings the world of Irpa to life. The story itself is engaging and easy to follow, while still carrying emotional depth. It explores themes of bravery, hope, friendship, growth, and sacrifice, all of which are woven naturally into the adventure.
My granddaughter was especially eager to keep reading to find out what happened next, which says a lot about how engaging the story is for younger readers. The introduction of new characters also helped keep both of us interested and added fresh energy to the journey.
Overall, I really enjoyed Lightfall: The Dark Times. It was a visually stunning and emotionally engaging continuation of the series, filled with heart, adventure, and meaningful themes. It’s a wonderful read for children, and one I would happily continue with as the series progresses.
