Reviews: Leviathan (3)
“Complicated but good!”
(Paperback)
Try to pick out particular quotes to use rather than read the whole thing, as it is difficult to read.
“A must read book for politics”
(Paperback)
Hobbes has a unique argument style that should be practised more by us. His argument style is almost as close to scientific philosophy as I think we can get. He starts by making definitions and using those definitions to derive new definitions and then he makes a conclusion based on this string of logic. His arguments are hard to argue with and he defends a hard to argue point. He questions the basis of freedom and challenges how we view it. Unfortunately, the book is very hard to read and even harder to start reading but it should be viewed as a foundational text for political theory and is well worth the effort it takes to read it. Although it does go a bit too far into religion for my personal liking it is nonetheless a vital part of political theory.
“Part review”
(Paperback)
I didn't read the whole book - I intended to, but when Hobbes starting getting into the Holy side of things I was lost. Religion confuses me, and I'm not ready to learn. But what I was really interested in was the commonwealth stuff, the social contracts, the giving up of certain rights for the protection of others, all that kind of stuff. I don't even know how I heard about this book. It kind of seeped into my consciousness, and yet I knew that I would enjoy it. Which I did, the parts I read.
So if, like me, you have a wandering interest in most things beyond your ken, you might like this book. And if you can keep up with heavy references to countless passages from the Bible, you might like all of it. Who knows?
