This is a fascinating account of a politician who never served in a Conservative government but played an influential role behind the scenes, although sometimes in front of the camera. Brady writes with candour and insights into the successes and failures as the Conservatives failed to capitalise on election victories until their ultimate defeat in 2024. Well worth reading for anyone interested in contemporary British politics

Very matter of fact, Brady tells the events as it happened and takes you inside the rooms where the cameras don’t.

You do not have to belong to any political tribe to enjoy reading this, its made easier that Brady really sticks to the knitting, which can't be said of many political reads . The whole country went through the revolving door of Prime Ministers at No 10, I met most of them as a campaigner (except Truss). The role of chairman of the 1922 committee before the carnage was largely unheard of, let alone thrust into the public eye -as Brady clearly was. Let’s face it, if we look back on the political farce he did indeed had much to deal with, what the Tories do best is backstabbing each other which is self-evident. Nevertheless, Brady depicts himself as a calm person amidst the turmoil of a political party effectively hung by their own petard. If you add to that a Coalition, Brexit and Partygate there is a lot to cover, but he manages to do this well in a readable account without too much character assassination, but in between the lines he does pull some punches and clearly demonises Boris, but he does it as you would expect from a Kingmaker in a very diplomatic way.

A well-written, consistent and detailed account of 14 years, and certainly a more trustable version than the mendacious one, the conspiracy theorist one and the delusional one published recently. He finds the key weaknesses in each PM in turn, but it feels like the final punch is always pulled and, whilst there is a degree of honesty about the Tories’ mistakes as a party at each turn, there is a hole at the end where a conclusion should be - without that, Brady never quite stands enough back to wonder what would explain the whole 14-year saga, rather than its individual episodes, and how the rot might now be stopped.
