Reviews: Killing Ground (1)
“Good”

The sixth doctor is a doctor I enjoyed more in print than on TV. I enjoyed colin Baker's performance as the doctor but his TV stories themselves are ones I'm not overly keen on. There are a few I like and I'm a who fan who happily watches stories I'm not keen on as, well, why wouldn't you really? So I did generally enjoy the sixth doctor books more. This is a very good one that loses a star for two reasons. The first is the companion. Grant Markham was introduced in Lyons previous sixth doctor novel, time of your life. I don't really think grant works well as a companion which is a shame as the rest of this book is good. The cybermen are back and the story itself is a solid one. But then we have the second reason for the dropped star. This book is unrelentingly brutal. Too brutal at times. If it was to be written now it would have to be seriously toned down. I've said on reviews of various new who books that they are aimed at a younger audience but actually I've realised that isn't entirely accurate. The new who books are aimed at a wider audience not strictly a younger one. The virgin books and the BBC pre-2005 books are aimed firmly at the smaller adult fan base of what is referred to as the wilderness years, the period when who was off air. Killing Ground is a good book. I enjoyed it. But the weak companion and the brutal nature of it make it a good book rather than the great cyberman return it could have been.
