Reviews: jQuery Mobile Web Development Essentials (1)
“Good starting point to learn jQuery Mobile”
(Paperback)
Just finish the book yesterday and I think this book is a good starting point for learning jQuery mobile. First of all, I would like to give it 3.5 star but since amazon not allow half star so well, make it 4 then. The reason behind that base on:
For the good side:
1. easy to read and follow
2. tons of applicable example and code
3. covered some advanced topic like building native apps and theme
However, the major issue for me about this book is it's not clear who are the intended audience. As the preface mentioned, it is for people who want to learn jQuery mobile so it is not a advanced or reference book for jQuery mobile. In this matter, this book did its job and did it fairly well.
Being said that, I would like to categorize 3 kind of people who can consider "beginner" for jQuery mobile. a) true beginner for programming. b) normal programmer who want to get their feet wet in mobile web programming c) web developer who already have exp in jQuery and would like to know jQuery mobile. For this book seem to aim for the audience from "group a" at the first glance as the first half of the book (102 out of 225 pages) keep repeating the simple html examples for 7 chapters. Chapter 8 is the first time I saw javascript in this book. but since then, the learning curve shoot up exponentially that covering advanced topic like javascript design pattern, event listening without much details/background provided.
Therefore, for the pure beginner, they will appreciate the detailed step thru for the first few chapters but left scratching their heads start from chapter 8 (maybe even for programmers who have no web development background). On the other hand, experienced web programmer will find the first few chapter too "easy" and repetitive and the second half of the book too short.
In summary, in mind my this book need to double the number of pages to make it pure beginner book OR condense the first 7 chapters to under 3 chapters and has few more chapter to cover advanced topic for the more "experienced" beginner. Now it seem like fall in the middle of both and fail to satisfy either end of the spectrum... and the high price point for a 200-300 pages books also doesn't help. otherwise, it will be a 5 star.
p.s. There are some editorial error in the book. More than one place that the author mentioned the next topic will be cover is such and such but ends up is something else. Seem like the editor may swapping chapters around in the last minute? e.g. the end of chapter 9 seem not connected with chapter 10....
