Reviews: Isla's Missing (3)
“A riveting read”
(Paperback)
4.75*
I absolutely loved this book. It has an eye catching cover.
Murder squad book #3 with DCI Reece.
Arvel Baines has had 30 years of stewing in jail for a murder that he didn’t commit. He has had plenty of time to plan his sworn revenge.
When the son of the true killer wakes up on his kitchen floor to find his wife dead and his teenage daughter missing it looks like game on…
It grabbed me from the beginning as we are led straight into the guts of the story. Arvel is very inventive with his revenge methods.
I love the concise, to the point easy going writing style. It still manages to be totally descriptive without losing any pace, which motors along well.
It’s doesn’t all go Arvel’s way. A favourite quote ‘Billy Creed had introduced the mother of all complications’.
There’s so much going on keeping me engrossed.
The story unfolds using 4 points of view.
-Arvel isn’t a likeable character, he has some moral code, not wanting to kill randomly, but that seems to be his only redeeming feature, unsurprising after 30 yrs in prison.
-John Kosh, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him.
-Reece seems like a good cop. He is following his instincts which tell him all is not as it looks. I like the friendship with his long time friend Yanto.
-Isla who is only known to be missing by the police. She is gutsy.
The ‘kangaroo petrol’ comment made me chuckle and bought back some old memories.
It has quite an action packed but realistic ending.
I loved this book. I highly recommend it.
All it’s missing is that little extra something to make it into my books of the year.
“A thrilling read”
(Paperback)
This is my first read by this author and I thought the premise of the book looked interesting and my kind of read. In one word - wow. I started reading this and was hooked right from the start. I found this to be a very engaging, thrilling read that was very hard to put down. I loved everything about this book - the author’s writing style, the way the story moved from past to present times so easily and came together so well, the characters - some likeable, some not, and the cliff hanger chapter endings. A 30 year old murder returns to haunt a community with devastating and tragic consequences and this book is all about revenge. Overall this was a very enjoyable read and whilst it’s the 3rd in the series it can be read as a stand-alone. There are brief references to previous events, and I will read the two books before this when I can. If you like crime, thrillers, police procedurals I’d recommend this book.
“Fast Paced Crime Fiction”
(Paperback)
Thirty years ago a man was murdered, and another man framed for the act. All these years he's been plotting his revenge.
Arvel Baines swears to ruin all the lives of those who responsible for the murder and for his losing 30 years of his own life. There is one man in particular who will be made to suffer more than the others.
When the son of the actual killer wakes up on his kitchen floor to find his wife dead and daughter, Isla, missing, so begins a deathly game of cat and mouse.
DCI Reese of the Murder Squad and his team have been called in to investigate. Not only do they have to find the missing teenager, they must stop the killer before more lives are lost, and they have to go back 30 years to look into the crime that started it all.
This is a fast=paced crime thriller, suspenseful from start to finish. The characters are all deftly drawn. The real killers are identified early on, but it's how the cases are solved that keeps the reader glued to the pages. Although 3rd in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone, however, I do recommend books read in order to grab those little nuggets of what makes this an intriguing series.
Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
