Read both books. Absolutely thrilling. Thank god for MI5

I was lucky enough to get a 1st edition signed copy from Waterstones for my birthday. This is Tom Marcus’ third book. It can be read as a standalone, but is even better for having read Soldier Spy first (so buy both!) This book carries on what Soldier Spy started, with even more detail about both MI5 surveillance, and personal details of his life. The operational side is fascinating, with a lot of detail and great descriptions that allows the reader to experience the adrenalin, excitement and fear with the author as he relives the experience. It had me on the edge of my seat more than once! The personal side is quite emotional, from his harrowing childhood to the problems he experienced with balancing his family life and covert work, and of course the PTSD that ended his career in MI5. I must admit, I was in tears in parts of the book. A very brave and honest account of his life. Like Soldier Spy, it allows us to get an insight into the hidden world that keeps us safe. These brave men and women get no medals or recognition for the dangerous work they do that lets us lead a normal life, without fear or worry. True heroes. Like his other books, this is not just a great read, but will be great to read over again. Tom’s second book was a novel, Capture or Kill. There is an extract of it at the end of I Spy (that’s for the hardcover version, not sure about other versions). Another excellent book, well worth reading, and first in a series, which I am looking forward to more of. Yes, I have become a big Tom Marcus fan!

I began reading this having read Tom’s first book Soldier Spy. This book is as superb as the first one. Tom gives more insight into life as a surveillance officer for MI5 and goes into more detail about projects he worked on from extremists to the Russians. I like how he has included a few chapters from his personal life showing how life in MI5 has impacted his life in the Service. The emotional side of things works really well with the plots he describes. I truly hope he writes another book like this in the future as I will be one of first to buy it. If you like something gripping and edge of the seat then this a book you have to read.

The language in this book is a concern for quite some audiences.
