I Made a Mistake is the new novel by best-seller author Jane Corry and I can certainly say that no mistakes were made by me in choosing to read this book! This is a slow-burn drama that is carefully layered using two story threads, those of Poppy and Betty, and a court-room scene as Jane Corry builds a superb tale full of suspense and mystery. The intriguing tale grabs you from page one with an opening scene set in Waterloo Station that is exciting and compelling. The reader is privy to the the identity of the person being questioned in court, but not the murdered victim's and the defendant's identity. From that point onward you are taken on a ride that gives the characters every motive as to why they could be the murderer. Aspiring actress Poppy Page's life hadn't worked out as she hoped so she established an agency providing extras for film and TV roles. Married to dentist Stuart with daughters Melissa and Daisy, the family shares a home with Poppy's mother-in-law, Betty. Poppy and Betty are close, and one day Poppy, attending a Christmas party, encounters an ex-partner, Matthew Gordon, a man she loved many years before her husband. This encounter leads to Poppy making the first of many mistakes. For her part, Betty tells her story through letters to Poppy and it details her adult life, from meeting her selfish husband Jock who has since passed away. Theirs was a marriage that Betty now considers a mistake as she opens up to Poppy. I Made a Mistake is stylishly written with comfortable pacing and there are plenty of twists and turns. The characters are very well portrayed, most are likeable, but all are pivotal to the novel, and I gleaned a clear understanding of them. Jane Corry redirects the impetus of the story really brilliantly from building excitement and provocation to spiralling descent into panic and dread. Very highly recommended and definitely a five-star, extremely clever tale. Jane Corry's previous book, 'I Looked Away' is a great crime thriller that pulls at the heartstrings. 'I Made a Mistake' is more of a psychological thriller, with the characters more defined from the outset. Poppy and her mother-in-law, Betty, are both keeping similar secrets of infidelity. Neither knows the other's secret at the outset, though Betty is about to reveal hers. The story flicks between Poppy's story and an on-going court case, where the reader hears evidence from people who know Poppy. Gradually, a story of manipulation and blackmail unfolds, making for a tense plot line with a slam-dunk ending. Another emotional rollercoaster from Jane Corry.

As soon as I can I order Jane Corry’s novels as, so far, they have been exceptional reads. This one is no different and I was engrossed from start to finish. Poppy is married to Stuart. They live with their two children, Melissa (17), Daisy (14) and Stuart’s mother, Betty. Poppy is running a successful theatrical agency while Stuart has a dental surgery so, living in their £1million house they are more than comfortable financially. Betty takes on many of the household tasks to allow both of them to pursue their careers. The story is told from two perspectives: Betty’s life with Jock, Stuart’s father, and Poppy in her pursuance of happiness when she meets a previous lover who left her for her best friend at the time. The mistake Poppy makes leads to a catalogue of disasters culminating in a trial for murder which is part of the underlying plot. Full of twists and turns with characters well-rounded and believable along with an underlying family situation which many people can relate to I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Poppy is not just a wife and mother, she's also a successful businesswoman. She runs an Extras company after failing to make it as an actress. She has a great relationship with her mother-in-law, Betty, who loves Poppy like the daughter she never had. But when Poppy meets ex-boyfriend Matthew Gordon, she makes a mistake that could devastate her whole family. Betty's life story I'd told in a letter to Poppy. There is also a court case where somebody is accused of murder. I did feel this was more a family drama than a thriller ut that did not spoil my enjoyment of this story. It's told in the present day by Poppy and the past is told by Betty. It's filled with twists and turns. Each character has their own backstory. A story of mistakes, guilt, regrets, death and lost love. We don't know until much later who had died and who had been standing trial. I really enjoyed this book. I love it when all the loose ends are tied up and all my questions answered. I do recommend this book.
