Poppy is married with two daughters, a father and a mother in law. She runs an extras agency and is happy with her life. The an old flame walks back into her life and her life will never be the same again. Loved this roller coaster of a book. Twists and turns everywhere with plenty of surprises along the way.

I was very excited to get my hands on this book as I have a very good track record with this author. It's no surprise (I five starred the book) that this was well up to her usual standards and I thoroughly loved it. Poppy Page is married with a couple of children. She started off in life as an aspiring actor but had to concede that her dream would never be fulfilled so she now runs an agency that provides "extras" to act in productions. Want a middle aged vicar with a beard for a scene in a tv show then Poppy can find you one! She's at a party when, from across a crowded room, she sees a blast from the past. With the weather scuppering her travel home, they are once again thrown together and spend some time catching up. Little did Poppy know at the time but this meeting would set in motion events that would throw every part of her life into disarray. In a very dangerous way... The blurb gives little away and I think that's a good idea. This is one of those books where the little you know upfront the better. Much better to go in cold and discover all the secrets, lies, duplicitous behaviour and other shenanigans as the author intends. Needless to say that it is extremely well and tightly plotted, and that plot is executed with aplomb by some very colourful and well described characters. Pacing is perfect as the author keeps the tension ramped up all the way through, drip-feeding titbits all the way through to keep the reader on their toes throughout. Although I did guess a couple of things early, I was never prepared for what was eventually revealed. Oh! My! Days! Sublime... What really sets the book apart from others of the genre is the way that all the way through we hear from Poppy's mother-in-law, detailing her own life in the form of a letter to Poppy herself. This was in itself very eye-opening and fitted in very well with what was going on for Poppy throughout the book. All in all, a cracking addition to an already well impressive back catalogue. I really can't wait to see what the author serves up for next time.

I’ve not read any Jane Cory before and she didn’t disappoint. This is a great plot, with plenty of twists and turns, an excellent read. A family, each one getting on with their lives is torn apart by one stupid but very damaging mistake. How could she? Communication is key here, if only they had talked, too late for ‘what ifs and buts’. This is written from two perspectives; from Poppy’s, a mother of two girls married to Stuart, a dentist and her mother-in-law Betty who was oppressed and suppressed throughout the whole of her marriage to Jock. How much can one person put up with? Jock was a tyrant, a bully and the way in which he treated Betty was shocking, which made me feel uncomfortable sometimes, such raw abuse, not physically, mentally. Poppy is a very successful businesswoman, running an extras agency, however the way she runs her life is chaotic and the demands and challenges she has to deal with push her to the edge. Thank goodness for her outstanding mother-in-law who moved in with them when Jock died. Then, BANG, Poppy bumps into Mathew an old flame who dumped her mercilessly a long time ago. She was still attached to this guy even after setting up a great lifestyle and rearing a family with Stuart. This was a very dangerous coming together and as Poppy was suspecting Stuart of being unfaithful her good sense wained, which had dreadful consequences. Cory weaves together a number of issues into this novel, all that are realistic and to some relatable. Deceit, infidelity, narcissism, oppression, suppression, blackmail, dementia, communication issues, forgiveness, friendship and uncontrolled lust. Poppy is in the witness box in court. Who did it? A great read with well developed characters and an immersive story line. I particularly loved reading about Betty and the life she lived behind closed doors. Thanks to Ellie @ Penguin General (Team Jane Corry) and Netgalley for an early copy of this great book.
