Reviews: I Made a Mistake (85)
“Highly enjoyable psychological thriller and family drama”
(Paperback)
by Reading Frog
I Made a Mistake is told from the points of view of Betty and Poppy. It's a blend of psychological thriller and family drama, with lots of emotional themes running through it like domestic abuse, stalking, rape, infidelity. I found Betty's story more engaging than Poppy's and at times I found the narrative was a bit slow and the descriptions of Poppy's domestic life seemed a little ordinary. Yet this aspect also works well when things happen that threaten that ordinary life because it makes it all the more real. The plot simmers to hold the suspense and the tension really builds up. I thought the twist was great and I wasn't expecting it to turn out the way it did. An enjoyable read.

Poppy Page is a wife, mother and a successful business woman, everything was going perfectly until she met her old lover Matthew Gordon at a launch party for actors. He brings up the past and Poppy does the unthinkable and sleeps with him. What unravels is a nightmare from her mother-in-law's past and her own dilemma.

A courtroom drama and some clever twists manage to elevate this story from a rather ordinary morality tale about having an affair to more of a page turner. Thank you to netgalley and penguin books for an advance copy of this book
“Family drama”
(Paperback)
by Alice Anderson
I Made a Mistake by Jane Cory is a fast paced family drama. It tells of Poppy, a mother who has her own business and juggles family life and being in charge of her company. She meets an old flame at a conference and the drama unfolds from there. It’s an interesting observation of how parents get caught up in their working lives, neglecting their personal relationships. I particularly enjoyed reading the letters written to Poppy from her mother-in-law Betty. These describe the contrasting roles of married women and the relationship between husband and wife from the 1970s to present day. An easy pleasant read.
“A fascinating tale well told with twists and turns”
(Paperback)
by Dana Farren
My fourth book by this author and yet again she does not disappoint. After an intriguing start in an underground station this novel begins with the introduction of Poppy - a busy Mum in a rather mundane marriage juggling her own business, a home and two children. This is all made possible by her mother-in-law, Betty who while following various pursuits gives her untiring help with the running of the house and the care of the children. The story continues with Poppy's story and that of Betty's past, both women's characters are well portrayed. As the story continues the tale becomes darker and the pace quickens. A fascinating tale well told with twists and turns. Many thanks to Netgalley for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.
