Here is my review of I Made a Mistake by Jane Corry. It is set in London and centres around a family, the husband, Stuart, is a dentist, the mum, Poppy, works from home with her own business supplying and sourcing extras for the film industry. They have two daughters, Melissa and Daisy. Stuart’s mum Betty lives with them too and helps with looking after the teenagers where necessary. One evening in December, whilst attending the Association of Supporting Artistes and Agents Christmas party, Poppy was chatting to Jennifer, one of her clients when Matthew Gordon, looking gorgeous as ever, walked into the room. It had been like two decades since she had seen him and he had broken her heart. She can feel everyone’s eyes on her and Matthew in anticipation, he is very good looking and it’s how he carries himself, like he’s important. Finally, I am rescued by Jennifer and Doris as they come rushing over to speak to him. I left them to it. Later, I end up booking a room at the hotel after drinking too much and bad weather. As I go up the stairs, I hear Matthew on the phone, he sees me and suggests we talk. Stupidly I agree. We share a bottle of wine, we chat, then walk up to our separate rooms, on the same floor. I know instantly the next morning it doesn’t feel right, I feel like I have betrayed my husband, I still love him. Does my husband still love me or is he having an affair with Janine? When Matthew rings I try to ignore it but then I have a problem with my dad and need to go down to stay, the hotels I usually use are booked up. I stupidly put this in a text to him. He comes back with some details of a hotel so I get booked up. I managed to sort my dad then surprise, surprise, Matthew turns up in Worthing! This time I have a large glass of wine but with all that is going on in my life, it’s time for me to cry on his shoulder but things happen that shouldn’t and I truly regret my actions. Matthew then shows his true colours and that he’s not a man to cross….. This is a truly intriguing book to read, it is like a roller coaster ride with big drops nearly all the way through and is told mainly by Poppy and Betty in sections. The ending is good though, I didn’t see it coming.

Very enjoyable read. We hear from both Poppy and Betty and also another who is on trial for murder. The story is written via chapters interspersed with letters and this is a great way to lay out the story. I made a mistake is indeed about a mistake, or two, or three... It seems no one is perfect and mistakes make us who we are. Sometimes in a deadly way. A great read, I'd recommend, this is one of Jane Corry's best I think.

An easy to read but powerful story of love and loss told to us in chapters by Betty and Poppy, two very different women with secrets that are gradually shared. When Poppy is surprised by her first love appearing back in her life she is quickly swept off her feet not realising the turmoil it will bring to her and her family, in particular Betty, her mother in law, Betty has a hard and tragic past that no one realises until an event results in her penning her innermost thoughts to Poppy by writing a frank series of letters. An absorbing story well told and worth a and even though I did guess where Betty's were leading towards the end.

My second book by Jane Corry, and I so enjoyed it. We meet Poppy and her Mother-in-law Betty, and learn about their past lives. Poppy runs a successful extras agency, and lives with her husband Stuart, their two daughters and mother-in-law Betty. Both Betty and Poppy have secrets in their past which threaten their future happiness. Then Poppy makes a mistake which changes all their lives, when the man she has an affair with is murdered. There are several fabulous twists to this story right up until the very end and I thoroughly recommend it.

The book is straightforward. It runs into different timelines. Betty narrates the story in past and Poppy in the present. As the chapters progress, we understand Betty and Poppy. The author presented the minutest details about their characters. The central theme is about mistakes and guilty. The stress is on the feeling of guilt when we commit a mistake (it lingers and takes a special corner in our mind). The reason I liked the book is author gave string and straightforward solution to our major modern-day relationships challenges. Always letting go of things don’t work out! Sometimes we need to be intelligent to handle a tough situation. Two women from two different times face different consequences for similar actions. Betty had her mother guide her. But Poppy wasn’t that fortunate to have, but she had Betty? Would the consequences be different if she could discuss it with her? It’s a question I pose for the readers to discover. I made a mistake is a domestic thriller that will grip you with its story and characters.
