I Made A Mistake
Jane Corry
Publisher: Penguin Books UK
Publication Date 28 May 2020
Jane Corry writes about ordinary women who find themselves in extraordinary situations. The main character is flawed but that makes her seem even more believable.
I Made a Mistake alternates between the story of Poppy Page, letters written by Betty, Poppy’s Mother In Law and the “now” where someone is on trial for murder. I found the tension built keeping me engrossed and desperate to find out the conclusion. Plenty of twists and turns.
Thank you to the author, publisher and netgalley for providing me with this advance digital copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
“An absolutely fantastic slow burner!”
(Paperback)
Jane Corry has done it again! I gave her last book 'I Looked Away' a 5/5 so I thought it couldn't get better than that. I was wrong. This book is fantastic and I just couldn't put it down.
The beginning pulls you in with a death at the tube station. We then have alternating narratives from Poppy, a married mother of two who runs her own casting agency, letters written to Poppy from her husband Stuart's mother, Betty and scenes from a court room.
Poppy meets an ex-boyfriend of hers at a casting party and is left shaken by it for numerous reasons but I don't want to give any spoilers! It's a slow burn that you just need to keep reading. Sometimes with slow burners I can get a bit bored but I was totally gripped with this one.
Jane Corry is wonderful at writing about and tackling real life issues; this one containing domestic abuse and postnatal depression. She writes twists very, very well and I would recommend this to everyone!
“An addictive read”
(Paperback)
If you are after an addictive read this is the book for you, it is full of twists that I never saw coming. The chapters are split between Poppy and Betty, Poppy has a husband but does she love him as much as she should, is she stuck in a rut? when a blast from the past comes back into her life, will she decide to make a huge mistake that will turn her world upside down? I am not sure how I felt about Poppy, she has two teenage daughters and a husband so I didn't see why she would want to mess it all up for nothing really. Betty is her mother in law and lives with them and it is interesting to see what she sees and hears. To hear Betty's story we go back into the past and see what her relationship was like with her husband, it has been very sensitively done and made me shed a few tears that poor woman. I felt like this book was kind of like an onion as you have to peel back the layers of this story to get to the centre core where it is all happening.
“Fabulous”
(Paperback)
Absolutely brilliant, loved it, I thought nothing could be as good as ‘I Looked Away’ but how wrong could I be. I loved the two stories that came together especially Betty’s story of her earlier life although all the characters were very likeable apart from Matthew. I found it very addictive and hard to put down the ending was fabulous and never would have guessed it I couldn’t recommend this book enough it’s definitely a must read.
“Dark tales of love and family”
(Paperback)
Poppy Page runs an agency for film extras, and things are going well until she meets old flame Matthew at a Christmas party. From that moment, her life is thrown into turmoil, culminating in somebody falling under a tube train. But who dies and who is held responsible?
As with previous Jane Corry novels, the story splits into different characters’ paths, in this case Poppy’s dealings with Matthew; her Mother in Law Betty’s life story, told as a letter to Poppy; and a court case where somebody is accused of murder. It’s not until quite late on the the identity of the victim and the accused is revealed, and what a revelation it is. While the victim was probably obvious, the accused was a surprise.
An enjoyable book, with a plot which came together nicely, all loose ends tied up and with a satisfactory ending. Worth reading, and an author to follow,
