I was completely absorbed. Beautifully written from a fresh perspective. Loved it.

Hush is one of those rare and precious books that reminds you what novels are for. Authentic and exquisitely written, it tackles the often unspoken truth - that getting the thing you want most can be incredibly hard. I don't think I've ever read a novel that captures so entirely that sense of postnatal ambivalence, or the push-and-pull between the desire for a baby and that for a rewarding career. It's sometimes raw and frequently tender, but Hush eschews melodrama, relying instead on compelling and well-drawn characters, like a middle sister to Elizabeth Strout and Sally Rooney. I also adored inhabiting New York in its pages - from diners to parties to running along the river - and the prose is as crisp and clear as the Manhattan sunshine it evokes. A tremendous achievement that will resonate with so many readers.

This book described many things I’ve never quite been able to put into words myself—as a mother, a person at work, a former New Yorker—that at times I was physically nodding along, like the author had processed and packaged my feelings for me. I finished it in a day but it will stick with me. A must read with a very satisfying twist.

Hush is one of those books that you race through and are then sad that you have finished. Kate Maxwell’s writing is precise and evocative. You can smell and taste the places she creates, whether they are the hectic streets of Manhattan or drab hospital waiting rooms. Hush is essential holiday packing - even if you are only taking hand luggage!

Love this so much. I thought it might be a bit mumsy. But, boy, was I wrong. The darkness creeps in very early on… in a very good way. And the writing – wow. Just wow. Maxwell manages to articulate our complex thoughts and feelings in such a crisp but deeply resonating way. How can this be from a debut author?! I also love the structure of following each London chapter with an NYC chapter – really helps build the contrast between Stevie’s glam old life and her polar opposite new predicament. It turned out to be so gripping that I haven’t managed to finish a book so quickly ever before. Can’t wait for Maxwell’s next book now.
