Reviews: How to Predict Everything (3)
“Fascinating”
(Paperback)
by Helen at Scarborough
This is an extraordinarily interesting, well written book, and I loved it! I wouldn't normally read a science book, but the premise (when will the world end?) was so intriguing that I had to read this, and I'm so glad I did. William Poundstone explains the different theories and formulas that form the predictions of when the world could end, and throws in plenty of anecdotes and stories to keep this book light hearted and readable, whilst still being complex and detailed enough to satisfy more knowledgeable readers. This also explores other subjects, such as the possibility that we're living in a simulation, the possibility of killer robots (AI), and whether or not aliens could/do exist. This was an absolutely fascinating read, and has left me with so much to think about. Highly recommended! (I received an advance copy of this in exchange for an honest review-thank you!)
“Fantastic book to test the waters of existential thinking”
(Paperback)
by RP Bullman
Very well written book, which once having explained the base theory, uses the knowledge to ask some very big questions. Fantastic book for anyone interested in maths and theories regarding singularities, Multiverses and the inevitable end of humanity (understandably not particularly light reading). Defiantly worth sitting down with and enjoying.
“How do you predict something that has never happened before?”
(Paperback)
by Poppy Smalley
I love a good Popular Science book, and this one did not disappoint. Poundstone goes into great length to explain to us fascinating mathematical formulas and makes them understandable for the average Joe (that's definitely me!) I love how sceptical he is - note the chapters on doomsday and the apocalypse - but how he argues for and against each concept. A truly fascinating read that will become a staple in the near future.
