Reviews: Hidden Pasts (1)
“Great read!”
(Paperback)
"Hidden Pasts" is book three in the Scottish Mysteries series by acclaimed author Clio Gray. Although these are very enjoyable reads as a series they can each easily be read as standalones if you prefer and all feature the characters Sholto McKay and Brogar Finn who unravel unique and interesting mysteries set in actual little known parts of Scotland in the 19th century.
Hestan Island is home to two men quietly living out their lives, until one day a boy is almost crushed to death in their tiny copper mine. Soon their shared past begins to unravel and as Brogar and Sholto become involved in the affairs on Hestan, truths are revealed going back to the Crimean war where terrible secrets are laid bare.
I loved how the preface introduced me straightaway to what lies at the heart of the story and I was instantly hooked on where the story would lead. The characters are all brilliant, well portrayed and in particular I loved Brogar and Sholto and their friendship and determination to get to the truth.
I love historical fiction, especially Scottish themed ones and this book contains all the qualities of an excellent atmospheric thriller from the rugged coastlines, native wildlife, local dialect to the unpredictable Scottish weather and with an original and well plotted storyline, they together make up this stunning and entertaining book.
I own but have not yet read books one and two but I intend to do so very soon after thoroughly enjoying this one. This is a well written, intriguing and very atmospheric book that all readers of historical fiction young and old should enjoy reading.
I have also previously read "The Legacy of the Lynx" written by the same author and is another fantastic historical tale which I highly recommend.
