Reviews: Her Best Self (1)
“Read the book for yourself and it wasn't my cup of tea!”
(Paperback)
Janelle Wolf is married to Charles and she has two children, and thirty years ago she had a car accident. It had a devastating impact on her life, broken bones, internal bleeding and a brain injury, her memories of the past are gone and nothing has been the same since.
Lana O’Shield is a psychic healer, she meets Janelle and tries to help her recover “her best self.” Janelle pieces together her past, nothing is as it seems, instead it’s full of secrets, lies and she wonders if her marriage picture perfect as it looks in family photos.
Set in a small southern town, the story is touted as a tale of deception, temptation and the road to love is filled with dark twists and humour? I must have missed that part or didn’t understand the plot and I wouldn’t class it as “southern fiction.” When I think of fiction set in the South, it’s more along the lines of fried chicken, corn bread and sweet tea and a certain style.
The narrative questions if a person’s memories are reliable, can they think something happened and it didn’t? The narrative is full of vengeance, dysfunctional relationships, a messed up family and lots of mystery. Please read the book and make up your own mind, I found it confusing and I wouldn’t class it as a psychological suspense novel, read the last two chapters again in case I missed something and it's not my cup of tea and a generous three stars.
