Reviews: He Started It (25)
“A fast-paced thriller”
(Paperback)
by Kathryn Graham
After finishing this book I sat in a stupour for an indefinite period of time. For the final 15% of the book I don't think I breathed. It's safe to say I really enjoyed this thriller We follow Beth and her two siblings, Eddie and Portia, as they recreate a roadtrip they took with their granddad when they were younger. Once they complete the roadtrip, step by step exactly as it was first completed, they'll inherit their grandad's multi-million dollar estate. As soon as the trip commences, it becomes clear that the siblings are hiding deep secrets from themselves, from each other, and especially from the reader Our narrator, Beth, is the most unreliable narrator I've ever experienced. And I loved it. I didn't believe a word she said, nor her siblings, as we're told constantly that the entire family are liars. I honestly didn't even try to predict any of the twists, I was just along for the ride, and when they all barrelled at me I was shocked I am now even more desperate to read Downing's first book, My Lovely Wife, and my faith in thrillers has been restored once more *A copy of this book was sent to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review*
“A good read”
(Hardback)
by Laura M
I’ve read my lovely wife and enjoyed (if you like gone girl or girl on the train then it’s that kind of vibe). Samantha Downing loves to add twists and turns which I enjoy. He started it, was a good read (not amazing) I found myself asking lots of questions but not always getting answers, which is why I think I’m not amazed by it. The ending is a bit underwhelming albeit a good twist.
“A Very Dysfunctional Family.”
(Hardback)
by Louise Wilson
Beth, Portia and Eddie had been directed to take a road trip after their grandad died. They have to take the trip before they can claim their inheritance. They have to take the same road trip they took together twenty years ago. They take their grandad's ashes with them. Also along dot the road trip is Beth's husband and Eddie's wife. This book is more than just your typical dysfunctional family. There is a large inheritance at stake and stipulations they have to adhere to: anyone who ends up in prison, or does not complete the trip or deviates from the original journey will forfeit their inheritance. Sounds easy enough I hear you say, but these siblings don't get along. The story has a duel timeline from the present day and 1999 when they went on the original road trip that didn't go very well. The story is told from Beth's point of view. There's secrets, lies, rivalry and personality clashes. The story starts of slow but its ot long before thenoace pick up. The ending is mind blowing. I would like to thank NetGalley, Penguin UK - Michael Joseph and the author Samantha Downing for my ARC in exchange for an honest review. #HeStartedIt #NetGalley
“Strangely compelling”
(Hardback)
by Patricia Moren
This is a family centered story , very complex and all the members of the family were as guilty as each other. Money was at the root of the problem and there was an unexpected conclusion. I found the storyline very depressing but strangely compelling.
“Compelling and original”
(Hardback)
by Dana Farren
Yet again Samantha Downing has written a compelling book with fascinating characters, an original story line and twists and turns you just don't see coming. Eddie, Beth and Portia are not close siblings but they have to complete a road trip to inherit their Grandfather's money. This is a replica of a trip they took as children and as we journey with them from town to town we learn what happened on the original trip and follow the trip they are repeating in the present time. Well-paced, well told and an excellent and different follow up to her brilliant debut, My Lovely Wife. Many thanks to Netgalley for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own
