Out now in paperback, I'm so happy to have found this adorable story. Eve Coy's illustrations are incredibly tender and emotive, they are perfect in every way to visually tell Troy Wilson's story of a lonely old man. Every day the old man has his routine, he puts on his hat topped with a few peanuts for the squirrels, and head outside to the bench where he enjoys sitting out in nature to pass the time. One day he finds a little kitten hiding in his hat on the bench… who he names Hat. Hat goes back home to live with the old man and now he no longer feels lonely, but he's afraid the if he lets Hat outside, she may never return or might chase the squirrels. In a sudden twist in the tale, the old man never returns home one day. The reader feels a pang of dread… has he suddenly passed away? A lady and her daughter come to the house and look after Hat… Hat wonders what has become of the old man. Then he returns at last and Hat knows that she'd never leave the old man and the old man knew it too. Just absolutely adorable and explores relationships that the elderly who live alone have with their pets, the emotions that both might feel (love, trust, anxiety), and what might happen to the pet if the owner dies or is hospitalised.
