Reviews: Harlem Hellfighters (1)
“Stunning, shocking, a must read!”
(Paperback)
by Danni at Oxford
A strong new edition to the graphic novel front. As mentioned in Brooks forward this is a regiment that have seen little to no recognition in terms of history. And that's what make it so interesting! The Harlem Hell fighters were a troop of African-America soldiers who fought many battles on the front lines of world war I, earning them the infamous name "The Harlem Hellfighters". The story telling captures the attitude of the decade, despite being soldiers risking their lives, the prejudice of the times is obvious. Shocking graphic art works by Cannan White fuel the anger and action of each step of the story. The pacing of the story plays out much like a war movie would and I eagerly await the day he screen play is picked up. An important exposure of war history that reminds me very much of "Maus". A new triumph for Brooks that is very different to his previous works.
