I rather enjoyed this addition to the Discworld series as with its combination of power struggles, greed, the Nightwatch, dragons and the odd appearance by Death, there isn't a bit of this that is dull. We begin with the Supreme Master of the Unique and Supreme Lodge of the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night and his not so bright idea to overthrow the Patrician by summoning and controlling a dragon (which goes well for a while at least). Then we find ourselves in some long distant dwarf mines where a 'dwarf' named Carrot Ironfoundersson discovers that he's not what he thought and is sent to Ankh-Morpork to become a member of the Watch, a member that actually knows and tries to uphold the Laws and Ordinances of Ankh-Morpork. And so ensues an entertaining story of magic and mayhem as only Pratchett can tell with dragons showing their own strength and will power (and of course love of gold and virgins), the Watch actually doing some actual policework (shocker I know) and the little dragon that could (love Errol!!). Pratchett is absolutely on form with his dry wit and superb one liners and you can't help but embrace Carrot's absolute naiveté in all its glory (despite the odd not so useful repurcussions). This is a great read and one I would highly recommend, even if you haven't read any of the other Discworld novels!

Ah, the first Watch book. Sam Vimes is my favourite character in the whole of the Discworld, possibly the whole of literature. This is brilliant: subterfuge, dragons and Carrot. Pratchett is firmly into his writing style. Hilarious footnotes, playing with language at every opportunity. I love this one.
“The perfect starting point.”

With discworld having so many entries, it can be hard to know where to start, but look no further. This book is the perfect introduction to Sir Terrys brilliance. Meet the incompetent yet somehow brilliant night watch, and their particular policing methods in the city of Ankh Morpork (which is a character in its own right). I promise you, you won’t regret it.
“Great”

I came to the discworld series through my brother who recommended it after reading the first four books. When I read the colour of magic book 5 had just been released. I loved the books when I read them. Over the coming years I read each book and enjoyed them but unfortunately I started to waver with pratchett's writing. The books at first and for some time after, were very good stories and very funny. But I started to find that they became either a brilliant story but not funny or extremely funny with a weak plot. So after book 25, the truth I stopped reading pratchett. I do have very fond memories of the books though. None were terrible, most were brilliant I just fell out with them. The discworld series is packed with invention and humour. Characters leap off the page from rincewind, to the guards of Ankh-morpork, the witches to death, who is my absolute favourite character. The rating will give my feelings for each book. I still recommend pratchett to others despite my stopping reading him. The books are good and one day I may consider returning to them, time and money permitting.
“My first Pratchett. There will be more”

I've taken a while to come round to Pratchett. I've never been into fantasy fiction, but loved Good Omens on TV and see him quoted all the time on social media, so took the plunge with Guards Guards. This is a great book to start with, as it focuses on Ankh Morpork's much-derided police force, the City Watch. It's a comedy police procedural, where it just happens that they're investigating a plot to take over the city by summoning a magical dragon. It's a book full of warmth and wit, that takes on some fantastical plot twists. I found it a real treat and you don't need to know anything about the Discworld in advance.
