“Find your new favourite writer here!”
(Paperback)
Whilst the quality of writing is fairly high throughout this collection there are a few writers who stand out, and others who fall short. Amongst the outstanding few are Sarah Bernstein whose novel "Study for Obedience" I have previously reviewed on Waterstones.com, and Eliza Clark whose collection "She's Always Hungry" is now firmly on my wish list!
Without mentioning names, amongst those that fall short, some show promise but need time and practice for their writing to mature beyond the style and feel of creative writing students. Others write about addictions and bad relationships which are at once both too personal and too universal, i.e. we've all read more than enough of these sad stories already, so new writers need to find something to lift writing about what they know out of the ordinary into the exceptional.
The three stars I've awarded this collection reflect the greater number of "ordinary" works herein, but there are still enough exceptional pieces amongst which you might just find your new favourite author (and they might just as easily be one of the ones I don't rate highly, because we all have different tastes!).
