Reviews: Glorious Exploits (60)
“Vibrant and brave”
(Hardback)
by Rhianne
I’ve got to admit, the ending of this novel took this book from a 7/10 to a 10/10 for me. I thoroughly enjoyed reading its entirety, but the story really comes alive in its final third- the author took a hugely brave route with the ending. I found myself thinking “how did I not see this coming?! It was written in the stars!” but equally the way the story concludes isn’t what you may choose, as a reader- a hugely challenging and skilful tightrope for a writer to walk. I wouldn’t change a thing about this book. A final note- what a glorious portrayal of male friendship! Reminiscent in this element of Benjamin Myers.
“A new take on historical fiction”
(Hardback)
by Emily
I loved every part of Glorious Exploits, from its prickly characters to its tragic plot. Lennon’s style is a refreshing take on historical fiction; Lampo’s narration is almost modern, as much a 21st century boozer as a pot maker in ancient Syracuse. This book is equal parts funny and heartbreaking, and I’m excited to see what the author does next!
“A glorious tribute to the importance of storytelling”
(Hardback)
by H Rose
In many ways Glorious Exploits is like an Asterix novel for grown ups with numerous humourous moments, a dash of romance and sublimely-drawn comic characters, but Lennon's ability to write an utterly enjoyable novel (in spite of an often frustrating central character), then to mix comedy and tragedy in such a skillful way taking you to the brink of devastation and back, is what makes this really stand out. Glorious Exploits weaves classical themes of hubris, pathos and ethos, Fate, Fortune and the Gods with enduring themes of trying for the best in the face of adversity, the tragedy of war and it's ramifications, and the value of storytelling. Ultimately Lennon invites us to seek out and value the humanity in those we consider as foreign or enemies, a timeless and universal message which makes it an excellent winner.
“A much needed novel”
(Paperback)
by Ella-Mae at Lewes
Winner of the 2024 Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize with good reason... Lennon crafts an evocative tale filled with plight and humour. Many people have compared it’s humour to being similar to Monty Python, and whilst I agree somewhat, they miss out the true grit and heart at the center of this tear-inducing novel on morality, empathy and humanity. A much needed novel. Absolutely mesmerising. I cannot wait to see what Ferdia Lennon does next.
“Completely enthralling”

I'm already calling this my book of the year- funny, adventurous, sad, thoughtful and so tense I could not put it down. By the end I was ignoring all my responsibilities to finish. You've got to read it
