Spanning the globe the book introduces us to nine characters, from a Chinese Holy Mountain tea shop owner, to a KGB man in Mongolia, to a terrorist in Okinawa as they hurtle towards a shared destiny. Each has their own story, each with a distinct style, reflecting the characters and setting. The stories are linked, initially these links are tenuous – a misplaced phone call, a shared table in a burger joint but as the novel progresses the connections fuse and strengthen. Transmigration is a concurrent theme as ghosts weave amongst the characters dancing between love, political intrigue and history. The Cultural Revolution & Red Army in China; A late night radio DJ in New York; Art theft in St Petersburg; The Gas attack on the metro in Tokyo and love in a Jazz shop all somehow linked by chance; fate; coincidence or maybe chaos? A very clever book which kept me enthralled.
