Reviews: George Harrison (2)
“Behind that Locked Door”
(Hardback)
A well researched and balanced view of the life of George Harrison. Even the parts about his time in the Beatles which I've read about in other biographies were given a fresh perspective here, highlighting his role and views on the events. I also had a few "I can't believe I didn't know that happened" moments during reading this. I would have liked a bit more focus on his guitar playing style/influence and his eastern spirituality but that's more of a personal preference than a qualm with the book.
“George by Philip Norman”
(Hardback)
I am about 2/3 way through so it may get better but slightly underwhelmed . Its very well researched as you would expect but seeing as he has written Shout! and biographies of Lennon and McCartney that's not surprising plus the Beatles story is so well known there is nothing really original left to say . Also 2/3 of the book cover the period up to the Beatles break up and its the period after , especially the early & mid 1970s ,which I find most fascinating and are generally less well documented. I have been spoilt by reading and re-reading Graeme Thompsons Behind that locked door , which is a far more forensic deep dive into George the man and I think the best George book you will find . I may be unfair as I am only up to chapter 16 of 29 . If you are not a Beatle fanatic like me you will enjoy this book as it gives a great description of his early life in Hamburg and so on , but if you are a Beatle anorak you wont find anything new. Be interested to see what Norman has to say about Georges difficult relationship with John in the 70,s and his much longer up and down relationship with Paul.
