3.5 ⭐ A very creepy and atmospheric read. If you like Woman In Black, Coraline and Bly Manor/Haunting of Hill House then this book will be one you definitely need to pick up. This also reminded me of The Near Witch by Schwab. I would say the book has quite a slow pace, but builds to some reveals in the last chapter. In this YA fantasy Novel, The main character Olivia is desperate to know her family, and escape her life at the boarding school. She's a strong and likeable character. Gallant has ghosts, family history and lots of mystery. I really enjoyed the artwork throughout. I liked the mystery, I genuinely had no idea what to expect, and what the secrets of the House were... I think Gallant definitely has potential to continue, and a sequel could be interesting! *Thank you to Titan Books for my gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.*

3/5⭐️ (I pressed the wrong star amount) The premise was quite promising and I did enjoy the general story and the lead girl, however, perhaps fittingly for the story, constantly throughout I kept feeling like something was missing but I couldn't quite put my finger on what.I think perhaps things felt a little short, it's not that short of a book and yet I felt like it easily needed maybe another 100 pages to really establish character relationships more and give a more satisfying ending. Still though it was perfectly fine and I wanted to read on.

A quick enjoyable read about a child who was deserted as a baby at an orphanage with little information on her history except a book that she assumes belonged to her mother. She cannot speak and is shunned by her school friends or rather school enemies, however she has a talent for seeing ghouls. One day a letter arrives at the school purportedly from her uncle who implores her to come “home” to Gallant. Once there she discovers her family history and learns how their fate is inextricably linked with the shadow world. Although not as involved or accomplished as The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, Gallant is still a great read. Maybe more YA than adult fiction which is in no way a negative. Nearing the end of her time at the school Olivia receives a letter from an uncle she's never met, summoning her to his estate - Gallant. When she arrrives she discovers that the estate is not normal, just like her, with talks of a curse and the mystery of her family playing on her mind, Olivia discovers theres more than meets the eye. I've wanted to read Victoria Schwab's books for ages and I'm so glad I've experienced her writing now. Gallant is a brilliant book. It's so cryptic and atmospheric, it's difficult not to be sucked in. Olivia as a character entrigues me as she is unable to speak but is such a compelling character to follow. The story of Gallant is so dark and twisted, it's addictive and I read this in two sittings. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a dark YA fantasy.

Gallant is the second book I read by V. E. Schwab and I think it’s time I start on her backlist, too, because I am really loving this author and I found Gallant to be a brilliant and engrossing story. The protagonist of Gallant is Olivia Prior. She doesn’t speak, but she knows how to express herself. She is an orphan, raised in the Merilance School for Girls. The only thing she has left of her mother is her journal. In her journal, her mother warned Olivia to never go to Gallant, the place she escaped from before Olivia was born, but that’s where Olivia is headed after being summoned by her uncle. However, when Olivia arrives at Gallant, her uncle is not there, her cousin doesn’t want her there, and the house is full of mystery and secrets, ghouls, demons, and shadows, and a wall that leads to alternate Gallant. I savored each page of this book. The plot is gripping and intense, featuring the author’s distinctive style. Olivia is a fantastic heroine. A young woman with unique abilities who lives in her own world, ignored or bullied by the other girls in the school. She is drawn to Gallant, despite being warned off both by her cousin and by her mother’s journal. It is her home, where she finds her family, and, as she uncovers its secret, she will have to make a choice. I really liked and rooted for this character. Gallant is a gothic and thrilling novel. The pace is very slow, but it makes up with the atmospheric and thrilling plot. An incredible read!
