The FT's economics books of the summer review describes this one as "gripping". My goodness that is the understatement of the decade. What a journey this is. Frontier is nominally about the evolution of emerging markets and how the western money (check your ISA) has attempted to go to exotic places that might be the future winners The book mainly focuses on eastern Europe and Central Asia. It's Liars Poker funny on places and majors on a bizarre cast of characters who have been key players in this game. But that's just the start. Not another book about how Putin is really horrible or similar, in a way this is the anti-Davos anti-received wisdom version of the economic world. The financial stars of the show are all there, for sure, but this is really a story about the little people - and what amazing people they are! This book is probably worth a few percent on the GDP and stock market volumes of Poland or Turkey or Uzbekistan. And the story is told beautifully with some very moving moments along the often hilarious rollercoaster. Enjoy - and book your ticket to Warsaw. You will never look at the east in the same way again.
