Intricate, flowery, and introspective.

It’s no secret that Mary Shelley is an absolute ICON, and I can’t believe I’ve only just gotten around to reading this! I mean she was three years younger than me when she wrote this?? Leaves me feeling very unaccomplished because this is obviously such a masterpiece. It’s incredible how relevant this story remains to modern day. The gothic atmosphere is chilling, the writing style is so carefully chosen and evocative, and I feel so much for the Creature. I do wish there hadn’t been multiple instances of Victor falling into months-long fevers, but that’s just a personal, pernickety opinion! I loved it!

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone studying English Literature (I am studying it at A Level) because besides the 1818 edition of the text complete with invaluable footnotes, there is a mine of information included in the back, including critical essays and extended quotations from other texts that Shelley refererences, such at 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner', and 'Mutability' - fantastic since intertextuality is vital. However, the collection of critical material is actually longer than the novel itself, so if you are just reading for pleasure this might not be the right edition for you.

A beautifully presented edition ! I am proud to have on my bookshelf. The story is amazing ! Long live books ! Especially as beautiful as this one :)

Really great read that, despite the language having aged, is relevant to today's questions of humanity and compassion.
