Reviews: Fox (5)
“Inspiring”
(Paperback)
The lyrical text with stunning illustrations make this a joy to real aloud. Deals with the topics of death and the circle of life sensitivity but practically too, and includes helpful notes at the end to explain the science of decomposition.
The final page sums up the hopeful message perfectly: Life is everywhere. Death is not just an end but a beginning.
“Beautiful, lyrical, and sensitively written”
(Hardback)
An utterly beautiful book that tackles such a sensitive subject: death. The artwork is breathtaking and the language is lyrical - like a mini verse novel for children. It pulls you into the story, immersing you in the natural world. Disaster strikes - as it so often does in the world, completely unexpectedly - but it is handled in such a kind and reassuring way (and the same is true of the notes at the end of the book). What a beautiful thought that death is inevitable for all living things but in many ways, it is not just an end but a beginning.
(If it helps a prospective reader, I should add that this book isn't in any way preachy - the author is a well-known science writer and combines that background with her wonderful way with words and so much kindness and compassion. It's a very special book.)
“Important topic with stunning illustrations”
(Hardback)
Fox: A Circle of Life Story is simply gorgeous and important. The artwork is stunning and the sentences rhyme nicely - it'll be perfect for reading aloud to children and the colourful illustrations are certainly eye-catching. It is a story of beginnings and endings, of life and death, the circle of life. While the topic is difficult and sensitive, Isabel Thomas handles it delicately. It has very factual, practical and logical tone, but the illustrations add nicely depth and emotion. I think this is a wonderful conversation starter with kids, I certainly can see myself reading and discussing the story and the circle of life with my niece, when she's old enough.
I also love foxes very much, and I appreciate the positive portrayal of foxes in here.
“A Moving Story”
(Paperback)
Fox: A Circle of Life Story is an absolutely beautiful book! The story follows Fox on her journey through up until the end of her life. After Fox dies we see how her body is reclaimed by the earth and what we thought was an ending was really just a beginning. The illustrations and rhyming add to a comforting feel while dealing with what can be a difficult topic.
A couple things took me by surprised, both the sensitive approach to death but also the story being quite grounded in science. This is a great book for both kids in the "why" stage and out of it. This book is brilliantly accessible, it is both a learning tool and a lovely story!
A big thanks to Bloomsbury for gifting me a copy in exchange for a review! This was a really moving story!
“Wonderful Illustrations”
(Hardback)
This is a cute little story about the cycle of life. Wonderfully illustrated it tells the tale of a mama fox who has 3 cubs. She teaches them to hunt and play but one day is run over by a car and her little body curls up and returns to the earth.
Whilst sad, its a fact of life, i passed a dead fox on the road yesterday. I think this is a great way to teach children that death is nothing to be afraid of, that its all part of the journey we are on and that after we die, our body, if buried, would provide nutrients for other living creatures and from death springs life.
