This is decent blow by blow account of the emergence, rise and decline of the band that for many produced the best rock album ever. Focusing on Arthur Lee the genius creator of both the group and the music, particularly 'Forever Changes', the author analyses in good journalistic style the background, both social and racial of this iconic band. The main weakness is that the author is virtually silent on the songs-some of the greatest in the rock cannon-and the sections on musical evolution is thin. But read this alongside Andrew Hultkrans wonderful 'Forever Changes'-a short but brilliant account of the seminal album-and you have the perfect intro into the world of Arthur Lee, a great force that continues to shape modern music. One final niggle. the book under review is printed on cheap paper, that is sharp on the edges, the volume is very heavy and the pages glued together. A bit more spent on woven, paper, sewn signatures and more illustrations would improve this book immensely. For those who want to read about Lee and Love start with Hultkrans then move to this volume.
