“Beautiful and Heartbreaking”
(Hardback)
Flowers for Algernon leaves me wondering whether to stare into space and ponder the meaning of life or weep silently. How have I never read this book before?
It’s beautiful, heartbreaking, and profoundly humane and a masterpiece of empathy and intellect.
Keyes weaves a story that explores intelligence, identity, and what it truly means to be human. Through Charlie’s journey, we see not only the fragility of intellect but the quiet cruelty of prejudice and the aching tenderness of self-awareness. It’s both a psychological study and a moral mirror, and it broke my heart in the gentlest, most inevitable way.
If you enjoy character-driven, emotionally rich ( soft) science fiction — or have any fascination with psychology, intelligence, or the human condition — move this straight to the top of your TBR. I loved, loved, loved it. What a masterpiece.
“Absolutely Oustanding”
(Paperback)
‘Flowers for Algernon’ focuses on Charlie Gordon, a man who has the IQ of 68, who agrees to participate in a new experiment that will increase his IQ and make him a genius. However, life after the procedure is not as easy going as he would have expected. Keyes’ has done a spectacular job of conveying so many emotions within the book and after reading it, it was one I had to tell everyone to read. Don’t be put off by the science fiction genre on this book, as it is very much a tale of humanity and will leave you heartbroken by the end.
“Emotional masterpiece”
