I like my father have a fascination for Spitfires in all aspects of there history, reading "First light" by geoffery Wellum took me for a brief while in the seat of his Spitfire and got me that much closer ...... If you love Spitfires this book is for you.

Really well written, at times it feels like you’re sat in the cockpit with him.

I was fascinated by this book because although I knew about the Spitfires I had never read a book about them and their pilots. This gives an insight into how a young pilot coped with the second world war as a Spitfire pilot and his career afterwards. Sadly Geoffrey Wellum died just after I had ordered my copy which arrived promptly from Waterstones.

Anyone with the faintest interest in flying will be transfixed by this tremendous book. It has the excitement and pathos of a Biggles story, but with the hard edge of reality. Cliche I know, but you really are there in the cockpit. Highlight of the year for me (2025). Thoroughly recommended.
