Reviews: Finding Silence (1)
“A Jewel of a Book”
(Paperback)
by Griselda Appleton
This book is a true jewel: I confess that when I began reading, I couldn't put it down. Not the point, of course! So now I have begun again, slowly - a chapter a week as the title suggests - and discover treasure, both hidden and revealed, on every page. It is a book for anybody and everybody - those already on the spiritual path, and those simply seeking a point of stillness in their busy lives. Yet, as James Roose-Evans reveals, once we manage to make contact with that point, nothing remains the same - there we start to gather fruit we never knew existed: 'The practice of meditation is a journey and when we set out on it we do not know where it will lead us. We simply walk on in faith,' he says. The great value of this book is that it is born of experience - inspired reflections covering every aspect of the author's rich and varied life (from illustrious career in the Theatre and writer of many books, to ordination as an Anglican priest). Nature, the Arts, Psychology, Spirituality, the joy and pain of the human heart - all are here, woven together with threads of great beauty, warmth and understanding, as James Roose-Evans guides us towards our true goal: FINDING SILENCE. A rare and wonderful book.
