Reviews: Feeding Britain (1)
“Britain's "food policy" explained”
(Paperback)
The author is Professor of Food Policy at City University, London, a title of utmost irony as our current Government has no such concept. Professor Lang explains how our current self-insufficiency in food supply (roughly half of our food is imported) is intentional, and stems from the colonial presumption that the rest of the world will feed us simply because we are British. The shambles of Brexit (the EU being by far our greatest source of imports) has emphasised how fragile our nation's food security is.
The author covers every aspect of food production and consumption - wealth inequality, Government stupidity, farming, vegetarianism, climate change, fishing quotas, biodiversity, convenience food, food waste, subsidies, obesity, the "gig" economy, land ownership, and much more - to make this a comprehensive, informative, sobering, and fascinating read.
