Reviews: Far from the Madding Crowd (9)
“This edition is especially recommended”
(Paperback)
I think Bathsheba Everdene is one of the most annoying characters in modern fiction, but in spite of that, I love this novel. As usual, Hardy crafts descriptions that just stop me dead in my tracks. I read them over and over, and I call friends and read passages over the phone. Far From the Madding Crowd features some truly stunning rural descriptions and some thoroughly loveable minor characters. The scenes in the malthouse remind me of Shakespeare's scenes in Mistress Quickly's.
This particular edition is especially recommended because of the text used. This is the one Hardy novel for which his original manuscript survives. The editors used that, rather than one of the printed texts (the novel was serialized and then published in several volume editions, each subject to revision) for this edition. The endnotes show how Leslie Stephen (father of Virginia Woolf), who edited the novel for serial publication, changed Hardy's intended text. Some of it was censorship -- it is fascinating to see what was considered too vulgar or profane to be printed in the late 19th century! -- and some was simply for "clarity" (Hardy was notorious for inventing or using new words, some of which are now common usage) and in the process changing the meaning. The broad outlines of the story aren't changed, but the little details of language that this edition provides readers make it a real treat.
“A Good Reading to Spend Your Thyme!”
(Paperback)
After watching the film this year, it is a great way to top the year off with your Thomas Hardy knowledge. Bathsheba is an independent woman who needs no man, yet she finds herself in something more than a love triangle. Prepare for many proposals and refusals! Who does she pick, Farmer Oak, Boldwood, or the most irritating man in the world, Sergeant Troy? This book is all about love, faithfulness, and also tragic love- a typical Thomas Hardy book, a must-read.
An excellent read and enough to make you reconsider sending random valentine cards!

“Classic by……”
(Paperback)
……Thomas Hardy.
I have seen two film interpretations, time I actually read the book again since school.
Thomas Hardy evocative of time and place, the characters are so clearly defined.
The circumstances and traditions are recognisable in 2024, almost within touching distance of time.
Everybody should read Thomas Hardy throughout life.
“Beautiful Classic”
