Reviews: Eruption (8)
“Fast paced and thrilling”
(Paperback)
I went into this with relatively low expectations based on the subject, but I like both authors so I gave it a go. I read this book in 3 days because it was so fast paced and I was just enjoying it so much. I just wanted to keep reading. It read very much like a disaster movie which I found really enjoyable. There were no slow parts or any unnecessary fluff. I’m going on holiday to Hawaii soon and I wish I had read this there as I think it would be the perfect holiday read. I’ve already recommended it to friends. An added bonus was that it got me interested in volcanos and I learnt a fair bit after googling things from the book
“Continuing Crichton's great tradition of character led epic plots - great stuff!”
(Hardback)
Michael Crichton's books are renowned for not just their superbly relatable cast of characters, but also by their gripping plots, and Eruption does not disappoint on either score. John MacGregor, Head of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, is expecting a massive eruption in the next few days, and is busy pulling together his team and the action plan when an intervention from the nearby military base suddenly escalates the problem to unimaginable heights. Mac and his team have to race to head off this threat whilst keeping the public safe.
I loved this book. As with his other books, Crichton's research is meticulous and plausibly rendered seamlessly into his plot. James Patterson (as you might expect) has done a sterling job completing Crichton's unfinished manuscript and it's a fantastic addition to his catalogue. The characters are eminently believable, as is the science behind the eruption forecasting and development. Huge thanks to the publisher for my advance reading copy.
“Great”
(Hardback)
James Patterson completes an unfinished Michael Crichton manuscript to great effect with this new novel. You can tell this is an original Michael Crichton story as it is very much his style. He was an author who wrote subject books. By that I mean each of his books was based on a meticulously, I have to say, researched subject. Sometimes he used too much of the research in his novels, giving huge amounts of information, but generally that research was backed up with a well written story. The subject in the unfinished manuscript discovered by his family is volcanoes and there is lot of the research he did on the page. James Patterson has finished the novel using notes left behind by Crichton (and with his own ideas no doubt) to present a well crafted, well written novel with good characters and a thrilling plot. An imminent eruption threatens on Hawaii, an eruption which will have world threatening consequences due to a secret army base in the projected path of the lava. I loved this book. It is a great read, cracking along to a satisfying ending. A highly recommended ecological thriller.
“A gripping book banger of a thriller!”

My Review -
When I saw the cover of Eruption, I knew I had to read it, I'm a fan of James Patterson's books but had never read anything by Michael Crichton.
From the very first page Eruption will grab you by the shoulders and shake you like an erupting volcano, it is quite simply a divine and immersive thrill ride of a book.
I love the back story to Eruption, Michael Crichton and his wife Sherri used to go hiking in Hawaii especially the island of Kaui which was his favourite, and he started writing and researching it decades ago. Alas, it was never to be published whilst he was alive, but upon finding the manuscript, Sherri Crichton knew it needed to be completed, and waited for the right author to come along. When she connected with James Patterson, she just knew that he would do it justice. And he certainly has.
The descriptions of the settings for Eruption are sublime, the plot is simply perfect and the scientific side is easy for anyone to understand ( and I now know a lot about Volcanos) From the opening page this is an absolute gripping page-turner, I was so immersed I felt like I was there! There's no padding in this book it is just excitement all the way to the last page!
If you like exciting and gripping thrillers that read like a movie, then you must buy Eruption as it is scintillatingly excellent!
A huge 5-star read from me, and I shall probably read some more of the late Michael Crichton's works in the future.
“Fantastic read”
(Hardback)
This book , like the volcano, is slow to start but rapidly explodes. The hidden danger is not only nature, but what is hidden underneath in the “ ice tunnels” .
