Empire is a terrific achievement. The scholarship and research involved is hugley impressive, but equally Saylor tells a story that is gripping and exciting. From the intimate lives of the Pinarii family to the big set pieces (the Colosseum scenes are great), this is an intelligent and wonderfully entertaining historical novel.
