Reviews: Dying Inside (3)
“The loss of exceptional capabilities”
(Paperback)
by Nick Haward
There are many stories about gaining powers or capabilities some super-human but there are few about their loss. This is one of the most poignant stories in SF that I know of.
“Dying Inside”
(Paperback)
by Nick Haward
A unique story about the waste and loss of special power - of mind reading - a classic book that must be read
“An ode to the ordinary”
(Paperback)
by Tim Dumble
This entertaining retrospective, clearly draws heavily on the author’s own student experiences and provides a masculine view of university life and relationships in the 1950s and 60s. The whole narrative could be viewed as a sobering celebration of the ordinary over the exceptional. Indeed rather than being a gift Selig’s telepathy is seen as a barrier to making meaningful relationships. An alternative view might see the decline in David’s powers as a metaphor for life in general in which we all must learn to adjust the failing of our faculties and capabilities. Although with this comes a certain liberation and freedom from responsibility.
