Reviews: Dune (34)
“My brain!”
(Paperback)
It's so good but so much it took me a month to finish it but definitely worth a read
“The Chosen One”
(Paperback)
Paul is fantastic rendering of a trope character.
A 'chosen one' who doesn't mess around with his destiny, embraces his path and make genuinely smart decisions throughout. (I've never personally understood when a 'boy hero' in a book is made intentionally dumb to make them relatable - it just seems annoying. Luckily, Paul is not like this.)
A really interesting world to submerge yourself in - obviously a sci-fi classic.
Should be mandatory reading for any nerd.
“Amazing”
(Hardback)
The most amazing book of all time, don’t me dismayed at the first 40 something pages where it is a bit confusing power through and it’s totally worth it
“A timeless classic!”
(Paperback)
What hadn't been written about Dune... what with the recent screen adaptations, the written form remains the true medium through which to adore Frank Herbert's genious!
always a 5-star
“I'm in love with the harsh beauty of Arrakis”
(Paperback)
This is the first time I've read Dune and is a rare case of being glad I watched the film first! I absolutely loved both of Denis Villeneuve's Dune films and they ignited a love for the story and the visuals of Arrakis. Since seeing it, I've spent a long time thinking about that world and hearing Hans Zimmer's incredible soundtrack.
So here we go, embarking at last on reading The Great Dune Trilogy. After reading the first entry I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Seeing the film first helped me visualise some of the scenes and the book added extra background and context to some of the scenes that felt a bit unexplained.
Why only 3.5 stars?
I'm fully expecting that after I read Dune Messiah and then give this a reread it'll bump up to 4.5 stars. It really feels like a book that improves the more you read it. The half a star was lost because some parts were a bit of a slog, and it was only the pre-knowledge from the films of what was yet to come that kept me going.
I'm in love with the harsh beauty of Arrakis and the mythos of Shai Hulud, the Fremen ingenuity and the ruthless scheming of the Great Houses and I cannot wait to read more!
