Reviews: Dracula (40)
“Dracula”
(Paperback)
by Lauren McNeilage
This is such a wonderful book - you really can understand why it's a classic. Not only is the plot dark and intrigueing, but so is the story telling: I loved this book so much.
“Different Composition”
(Paperback)
by Masquerade
I bought this book for my son. Myself, I was attracted to the illustration on the front cover as I like books I buy to be aesthetically pleasing! He is really enjoying reading it, as it is written in a different concept to normal writers, the book is written from different peoples journals making it easy to read. Other Dracula books can be hard going so I'm told! I recommend the following books Les Miserables, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Trilogy and The Court of the Last Tsar. All brilliant books and very enjoyable reading :)
“An incredible, timeless read”
(Paperback)
by Lauren McNeilage
This book is the paragon of horror: a classic, thought-provoking shocker with an amazing story of good versus evil. I have never read another supernatural story as exquisitely crafted and unnervingly plotted as this, and would say that you can not call yourself a horror fan until you have read Bram Stoker's majestic masterpiece.
“A classic of English-language literature...”
(Paperback)
by D J Smith
'Dracula' is one of the most popular pieces of literature in English, and having returned to it for a second time myself, I think it has aged remarkably well since it was published in 1897. An epistolary novel, 'Dracula' isn't a straight-forward story. It is built upon medical reports, newspaper articles, telegrams, journal entries and letters, all of which tie in to give the reader the impression he is reading a dossier, a history of something terrible which happened to a band of brave people at the end of the Victorian era. Jonathan Harker is dispatched to Transylvania as a newly-qualified solicitor to deal with a noble 'boyar' who has recently purchased property in London, but quickly finds himself a prisoner at Castle Dracula. He is haunted by strange dreams... But are they dreams? Back in Britain, a ship arrives with a strange cargo, and local people hear howls in the night; one suffers blood loss after somnambulance... Could these occurences be connected? Mina, worried for her fiance in Romania, holidays in Whitby with her friend Lucy, who soon becomes ill. John Seward invites a fellow-doctor, Van Helsing, to diagnose her illness. Along with Lord Godalming and the American adventurer Morris, Harker, Mina and Seward join Van Helsing in hunting down these vampiric happenings in a chase which leads all the way back to the Balkans. The novel has it all- horror, suspense, romance, adventure, philosophy, the occult and much more, wrapped in a sublime Gothic atmosphere which keeps the pages turning. In reading this, you will be introduced to one of the great villains of world literature who has permeated the human psyche, as well as introducing yourself to a classic of world literature. Amazing.
“Tense gothic classic”
(Paperback)
by Tim Dumble
Like a Portrait of Dorian Gray, Frankenstein and A Woman in White, this is a must read Gothic classic which doesn’t disappoint. Forget Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, this is a much more nuanced and detailed work which delivers more psychological than visceral horror. The topographical detail of Transylvania and Whitby is thoroughly researched and vivid. This Penguin edition comes with detailed footnotes which give relevant context and accompanying essays examining Stoker’s inspiration for the novel as well an exploration of sub themes such as Victorian sexuality and desire. First and foremost however this is a thrilling horror story, populated by convincing characters the reader cannot help empathise with and root for. Read it for the description of the scenery, the fast moving, tense plot and the multi perspective narrative told unusually by diaries, journals and telegrams.
