Reviews: Do You Know Me? (3)
“Further tales of the daily life, adventures, and reflections of one sassy girl”
(Paperback)

Having read “Can You See Me?” I was eager to read this second book. I immediately re-engaged with Tally and the challenges that she faces every day. Since reading “Can You See Me?” I have started seeking assessment for myself as an autistic woman. I have read others’ accounts and have been deeply moved by all of them. When considering accounts suitable for children I find fictional narrative the most helpful way of opening doors to understanding, both for the child and for parents and teachers. With the two books featuring Tally we have the unique insight of Libby’s childhood diary which creates a perfect counterpoint to the storyline, grounding it with anxiety ratings, helpful tips, notes on key features of autism, such as PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance), and how Tally/Libby is really feeling. In “Do You Know Me?” we see Tally facing the challenges of a residential school trip. There is mounting tension as two schools come together for the week, outdoor activities and teamwork are introduced, and there are clashes between individuals, causing immense anxiety for Tally but also bringing her to new levels of self-knowledge and awareness. I heartily recommend this to all middle grade readers, not just those faced with autism, but everyone. This is a story about friendship, courage, standing up for what you believe in, and learning from mistakes. It is also about growing up, the universal story of all young people.

I thoroughly enjoyed the second in the series featuring Tally Olivia Adams. Tally is taking part in a residential school trip where she has to be away from home and everything that makes her feel safe for a whole week. What follows is a heartwarming adventure full of laughs, drama and friendship.
