“A brilliant beginning”

I watched the film first and wasn't all that impressed, so I am glad that I gave this series a second chance with the books. As with most fantasy/sci fi series, you get a much better sense of the world of the story from reading the book - it's far more immersive and real. "Divergent" is a dystopian thriller, aimed at young adults, but there's certainly enough complexity to the plot to keep older readers interested too. Tris is a character many readers can identify with - outwardly she's "nothing special" but she's capable of a lot more than people give her credit for. Unlike with a lot of books aimed at teenage readers, the romantic relationship that develops isn't a crazy "love at first sight" obsession - there's a much healthier development of feelings, beginning with attraction and being given time to grow into something deeper - it feels more real. More importantly, the relationship is on a more equal footing - it's not the boy protecting the girl and telling her what to do all the time - control under the guise of romance - which is a worrying feature in a lot of the so-called romances I've read lately. I thought this book was excellent and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
“Where's book two??”

Though some might argue I'm getting a little too old for young adult fiction, I am an avid reader of it. Divergent is one of the best young adult fiction books I've read in a while, I devoured it in an afternoon and absolutely loved it - so much so that I plan to sit down and read it again during my next free afternoon! I very rarely re-read books, especially so soon after I've read them, but Divergent is addictive. The end hints at a sequel - I've got my fingers crossed! In the meantime, I will satisfy myself with re-reading Divergent, and hunting down Roth's other work.
“A magnificent debut.”

As a fan of the upcoming dystopia trend, I couldn't wait to start this book, and I wasn't disappointed. At the age of sixteen, Beatrice Prior is facing the toughest decision of her life: stay with the Abnegation and her family, or transfer to another faction? After the choosing ceremony, she changes her name to Tris and spectacularly survives her initiation, finding friendship, love and conflict along the way. Divergent is a fantastic book, with well developed characters and an interesting plot that leaves you unwilling to put the book down. Roth is definitely an author to look out for.
“Absolutely Brilliant!”

I absolutely loved this book, and the follow-up to it. It was thoroughly entertaining and I just couldn't put it down once I'd picked it up; I was hooked from the first page. It has just the right balance of action, romance and plenty of twists to keep you wide-eyed as you read. The main character, Tris/Beatrice, is exactly the type of fierce female main character young girls need to hear about. The book, overall, is very well-written and very addictive. The ideal read for teens who also enjoyed the Hunger Games and Harry Potter. The perfect dystopian novel.
