incredible, amazing, shocking, sexy, despicable. In his three works of fiction David Vann has dug deep into what I can only assume are real childhood traumas. The hero of Dirt crosses back and forth between the spirtual and material worlds commiting several criminal, insane acts aiming for trancendencal glories. He is trapped in a stunted adolesence with a terrible family. Vann's writing is visceral, sometimes dense and painful. This book is disgusting .It is also beautiful.
