Liked the characters, found the battle scenes gritty and loved the historical backdrop! The glider assault of the Eben Emael Fortress was a truly amazing feat.

I almost never abandon a book partly read, but I finally gave up on this about three-quarters of the way through. The book is riddled with spelling errors - "Any sign of the enemy? Not a sole." and grammatical mistakes - "Just as they were approaching the bridge, (comma) the one that was no longer available to then, (comma) having been blown up by the Dutch engineers, (comma) they were stopped at a barrier, (comma) manned by a section of Chain Dogs, (comma) Military Police.". There are so many of these, sometimes several on a page, that there is no chance that this book was ever proof-read before going to print. The phrases the author uses do not ring true either - "lock and load" and "fire in the hole" having a modern ring to them that contribute to a lack of realism. The story of the actual assault on Eben Emael is repetitive and lacking in imagination, with two teams performing much the same tasks in the attack. You are left feeling that parts of the story were simply cut-and-pasted in. I can see why Waterstone's had this on offer at £3. In my opinion that was £3 wasted.
