I recently read book one of this series still to read book two and three, This is book four. Another fantastic read really enjoy all his books.This book starts with Kate Marshall and Tristan who work together they investigate crime. Kate loves to swim and gets into trouble ends up in hospital and meets a patient Jean who tells her story, about her three year old grandson who goes missing while camping will Kate find out what happened to him? Guessed the ending still a great read.Highly recommend this series.

I am a big fan of mysteries and thrillers, and this one was great. Private investigators Kate Marshall and Tristan take the case of a missing child. Kate had met Jean, the child's grandmother, when they were both hospitalized. Kate had gotten caught in a riptide and almost drowned. Jean is ill and knows that she is running out of time. She has a renewed urgency to try to find her grandson and hires Kate to investigate. Eleven years ago, the family - mother, father, child, and grandmother - had gone camping at Dartmoor. The grandmother, Jean, was sharing a tent with her grandson Charlie, who was only three years old. She left the tent for a while and when she returned, Charlie was gone. The case turns out to be more complex than Kate and Tristan thought at first, as Jean's daughter had been murdered shortly after Charlie vanished. There were dangers at the location, but not too close, and how far could a three-year-old walk at night? One thing I really loved about the book was how thorough Kate was. For instance, she discovered a reason why the family's search for Charlie had failed that night, by examining their photos and video of the trip. Kate and Tristan start their search at the camping site and then widen the search to investigate the whole area, including a nearby farm. Then they make a gruesome discovery. This is book 4 of the Kate Marshall series and can be read as a standalone book. Filled with twists and turns, Devil’s Way is the fourth Kate Marshall novel and the most gripping and satisfying yet! Beware the sea even when you think you know it well. PI Kate Marshall likes to swim in the sea near her caravan park in Thurlow Bay every day. It helps to centre her and clear her mind for the day ahead. But when a riptide catches her unawares, she ends up in hospital, lucky to be alive. As she waits to be cleared to go home, her neighbour in the ward, Jean, tells her about her missing grandson Charlie who disappeared while the family were camping in the woods in an area known as Devil’s Tor. Charlie was just 3 years old and that was 11 years ago, so the trail is pretty cold by now. Jean’s daughter Becky never got over Charlie’s disappearance and killed herself. The police found nothing helpful and now Jean, based on the little she knows about Kate from their conversations decides to hire her to see if she can find anything that might help them discover what really happened to Charlie. I do enjoy the Kate Marshall books. Kate’s partnership with her partner, Tristan Harper, is a good one and although they usually get on really well, this time their working relationship is a bit more discordant. Kate’s near brush with death has her in a spiky and more vulnerable position. She is craving a tot of the drink that nearly killed her and that’s making her shorter than usual. Tristan too is feeling unsettled on both the personal and professional front. It makes for an edgier than usual relationship and sometimes these two feel like they are worlds apart. The plot in this mystery is not especially surprising, but it is well done and leads Kate and Tristan to another gruesome murder, and from there to the woman who sees herself as the doyenne of a writing circle and thence on to a discovery that will start to clarify everything. It’s a nicely put together, layered story and is beautifully read by Jan Cramer who never over-eggs her reading but does inject enough mystery and suspense to make sure you want to keep listening. The characters are great and Robert Bryndza creates an excellent sense of place. He spins a terrific tale that is dark and so very atmospheric; full of dark woods imbued with legend and overlaid with discordant and sometimes dysfunctional relationships. Verdict: As ever Bryndza writes well and very engagingly. We come to these books for the characters and stay to enjoy the mysteries they solve.

While recovering in hospital from a near drowning, private detective Kate Marshall befriends elderly Jean Juling in the next bed who asks for Kate’s help in finding out what happened to her grandson Charlie who was aged just three when he disappeared on a camping trip eleven years ago. Kate’s interest is piqued and on her release from hospital she decides with the help of her business partner Tristan Harper to look further into the case. ‘Devil’s Way’ is the fourth in the Kate Marshall series and although it’s the first I’ve read I haven’t felt at a disadvantage by not knowing what happened previously. The plot is well-written, tense and involving as Kate and Tristan’s investigations become more complex. The number of characters increases, some believable and others not so much, and the cold case of a murdered social worker comes to their attention that they feel is connected to Charlie but are not sure how. The story has had me gripped from start to finish with twists and turns that have kept me guessing until I reached the final pages and the truth is revealed. I‘ve enjoyed it so much I’m now going to look for the previous three books and hope there’ll be a fifth in the series.

My second book in this series. Kate and Tristan are an interesting pairing for a private investigator team. Kate meets Jean in hospital, after nearly drowning, and learns of the disappearance of Jean's grandson, Charlie, 11 years before. Jean had believed Charlie had drowned but is now not so sure and wants to know for sure what actually happened. Kate and Tristan start to investigate, which takes them down many paths, and another death. The story is well planned and there are twists and turns galore. Good characters, good pace.
