Reviews: Devil's Table (5)
“This kept me guessing until the last pages”
(Paperback)
Book 5 in this series which is set on the Isles of Scilly. It's a gripping murder mystery that’s full of believable and well-drawn characters. A young girl goes missing on St. Martin’s, a small island of less than one square mile with a tiny population of just 135 people. It’s a place where everyone knows everyone, which makes things complicated for DI Ben Kitto who arrives to lead the search and has known all of these people all of his life. Even then, it’s a battle to untangle the relationships, grudges and secrets as he tries to find the child. I loved the fact that an equally important character in this novel is the weather, which is described so well it becomes central to the story, and Kate Rhodes really gives the reader a sense of life on the islands. As a mystery it also kept me guessing until the last pages. This is the first of these books that I've read and I'm planning to read them all now.

“Gripping”
(Paperback)
It’s a stormy and foggy night in the island of St. Martin’s when eleven-years-old twins, Jade and Ethan, sneak out of their house. Only one of them is found in their bed the next morning, but the shock of his sister’s disappearance has rendered Ethan mute and he can’t tell what happened to Jade. DI Ben Kitto is determined to find her, even if it means uncovering the family’s dark secrets. No one entered or left the tiny island of St. Martin’s, so it means that one of the inhabitants of the small community took Jade. But why? And where is she?
My favourite thing about the DI Ben Kitto series is not the mysteries, which are always gripping and suspenseful, it’s not the big grumpy protagonist who I adore, but the beautiful and atmospheric setting of the Isles of Scilly that becomes a main character itself of the story. After I finished reading Devil’s Table I went online to look at pictures of St. Martin’s and it’s magnificent (although, I looked at pictures where it’s sunny and people were sunbathing). The remoteness of the island, which nobody can’t enter or leave, and the bad weather gives the mystery a claustrophobic atmosphere with a bit of Agatha Christie vibe and I love it!
The plot is slow-paced and full of twists. As Ben Kitto uncovers secrets, not only regarding Jade’s family, but the entire island, things get more complicated and more people get in danger.
I love the character of DI Ben Kitto. A big man with a past who still haunts him, he has the job to interrogate and suspect people he’s known his entire life to find out the truth. He also faces changes in his personal life as his relationship with his girlfriend Nina develops in unexpected ways.
I have been reading this series from the very beginning, when the first book came out, and I am always looking forward to the next one. Twisty, atmospheric, and addictive, I can’t recommend it enough!

THE DEVIL'S TABLE by Kate Rhodes
BOOK - 416 pages
Rating - 4 stars
This is an enjoyable, twisting and tense novel. I was swept along with the storyline set on the Scilly Isles The protagonist, D I Benesek (Ben) Kitto is my favourite character, and I connected with him and his faults The writing style is to my liking with descriptions of the close community tensions coming to life as the story unfolds and kept me guessing till the end.
I would recommend this book and look forward to the next book.
I WANT TO THANK NETGALLEY FOR THE OPPORTUNITY OF READING AN ADVANCED COPY OF THIS BOOK FOR AN HONEST REVIEW
“Another entertaining thriller in the Isle of Scilly series…..”
(Paperback)
“Devil’s Table” by Kate Rhodes is the fifth in her #DIBenKitto series, set on the Isles of Scilly. Once again the story opens with a truly atmospheric setting, this time on St Martin’s and a veil of fog surrounding the whole island. When a young girl goes missing, her twin who relies on her to communicate, struggles to convey what happened. The whole island is involved in her search but is any of those same islanders responsible for her abduction. Nobody can be trusted and it’s down to DI Ben Kitto to discover who and why, would want to target the island’s most prominent family.
I liked the intermittent chapters where we learn how Ethan, the remaining twin is coping and as is the author’s traditional writing style, we alternate between Ben’s viewpoint of the case and one of the victim’s side of the involvement.
As someone whose Grandfather made ships in bottles, I liked how this was a main theme to the story and could picture them clearly when mentioned. Once again Ben’s adopted dog, Shadow, plays his therapeutic duties perfectly and always finds himself the hero of the day.
These books have a real atmospheric bite to them, naturally and beautifully rugged but hiding a sinister foreboding and although the author always includes distressing themes and brutal murders, I always enjoy reading them and feel good when finished.
Another superbly written instalment in a satisfying series and I look forward to reading the next “The Brutal Tide”.
