“Has most things you want in a vampire manga”
(Paperback)

For me, this manga is the perfect mix of dark horror, romance and comedy. What's great about this manga is the romance isn't shoved down your throat you can see it's come from a place of wanting to protect that has developed into something more meaningful. As with any romance that involves you adults in college one of them doesn't understand why they feel the way they do or the way they exactly stand. Not until something drastic happens that forces them to confess. Yes, in this case it's rather clichè and follows many other mangas with this trope. The way this romance starts annoys me slightly since this romance comes to fruition through Anzais' inability to fully control his bloodlust which we have seen time and time again in many vampire stories. Furthermore, this torpe continues with him trying to stay away and failing to do so which you could say makes the romance predictable. Which I do agree with. However this doesn't make it boring or cringing to read since this romance fits so effortlessly into the plot. Aside from one character making it a big deal it's mostly background noise. The closest you could compare this manga to is Tokyo Ghoul but with vampires which would be far off, just the gore and action happen much quicker. With the first volume you see the dark storyline start to take shape into what is going to potentially be a battle between legit organisations tackling the Devils and underground ones with better tech and efficiency with their methods in taking out Devils. This is already apparent about half way through when the threat of the first underground organisation takes out five Devils within the first month of the new year. Questions within Anzais' team quickly turn to how these perpetrators know who are Devils before they even transform. On top of this, two members are half Devils resulting in this being vulnerable to the new tech and maybe even be taken out by the killer. This happens far quicker then I expected as this was in my opinion set up to happen in the second volume not towards the end of the first. For me this felt rushed, I would have much preferred to have had the gathering of information on Anzai had lasted longer with more innovative ways of doing this. I only say this as we , much like Tsukasa, know very little about Anzai. We know he's half human and half devil fighting to control the devil side of him as well as, he works for an organisation that apprehends Devils who transfer and threaten the general human population. We know nothing of his past. This could be part of the allure to keep reading another volume, or we are only going to find out more about him the same time Tsukasa does. This manga has a lot of tropes that do feel very familiar. Tsukasa always needs saving, it doesn't matter if she's at school or at the store. No matter where she goes trouble is sure to follow. Then we have the contact freaking out but only in one panel then moving on like it didn't happen. What's with that? This is how Anzai and Tsukasa communicate half the time, I get this is a sweet teen romance but teens don't squeal at each other for 1 seconds that act like it didn't happen. It does somewhat make the scene in which they interact annoying to read. However, these tropes are what work for a lot of mangas and books so they can't be that bad or this just might be me. The flow of this manga in the beginning is rather stop and start between storyline but it's worth sticking with as this smoothes out towards the end and gives me real hope that volume two will be a smoother read as this got a lot of the introductory stuff out of the way making way for the character development. We do get to meet some of the other characters such as th women who Anzai use to frequent at night, Yanagi we get to learn she is some kind of devil as well as has a jealous streak which we see when she drops into conversation that her and Anzai had a “thing” however that is all we find out in this volume. We get even less information on the other side characters, which I find is disappointing since this could have made the sections of the volume with Anzai and his team more interesting instead of rushing to get through them so you can get back to reading the parts that carry more weight to them and the plot. Don’t get me wrong I did enjoy this manga and will read volume two to learn more about the characters as well as the plot since it's interesting enough. The art which at timesI found confusing to follow in the more action filled scenes does suit this type of story well, they have really done a good job of making Anzai look ill when he doesn't have blood yet in contrast makes the scenes around Tsukasa cute with a more feminine touch. Hopefully the development I missed in this volume I get in the second but this is definitely a promising start to a story.
